I’ve been an avid reader ever since I was a kid. In fact, reading his books are more enjoyable now, not only because of the incredible content, but I found myself smiling at the 90s references such as Sally Jesse Raphael or the infamous Michael Jackson Pepsi commercial.  Then I read Brene Brown’s “Daring Greatly” and found myself being transformed and engulfed with every word that my eyes saw.  I feel like they were all talking directly to me and it was powerful.

So, for the last 3-4 months, I’ve been cheating on authors that I gave so much time and money to for escapism.  As I learned through grief counseling, I couldn’t hide from my own reality anymore and dive back into fantasy like those books. I had to finally recognize my world, my flaws and even my strengths. I had to stop living in the worlds that people like Ian Fleming created and start living in mine, no matter how painful it had become. And for someone who daydreamed his way through school, avoiding reality, wasn’t easy but I had to for my own survival. I feel much better, stronger and happier than I have in years. I haven’t been this mentally strong in years and finally burning off that “grief weight” I added this year.  Will I still have my rough days? Sure! But now I feel better equipped to deal with them.

Last night I reconnected with someone I met at a program a few years ago who is a survivor of a horrific drunk driving crash and told me all about how he got attorney’s help with a DWI charge. She reminded me what success really means. When I told her that I wish I was doing more programs, she reminded me it isn’t about how many programs I do a year.  She said, “You told me in that first conversation that it was about affecting one person at a time, so you’re a success.” She thanked me for helping her start sharing her amazing story.  She reminded me of one of the reasons why I started The Magic of Life in the first place. She was right, it was to help one person at time with each presentation. I see that after every program I am fortunate to do.

I will eventually return to those authors that I escaped reality from, but for the near future, I will continue with those that speak to me directly and guide me to become a better person with their words of wisdom in my own reality.  Besides, if I really want to escape reality now, I can just play Spider-man on my PS4 and be a hero…well, until the controller runs out of power….

These last few weeks my son had a very bad time due to an allergic reaction that caused acne. Luckily we went to the right specialists and were able to pay for a very effective treatment. My son is in good spirits again and eager to win that championship
