Sunday, July 21st, will by my mother’s birthday. She would have been 77 if not for Harvey Dennison driving drunk that night on September 20, 1970. My 49thbirthday is on July 24thand it is not lost on me that our birthdays are so close together. But this July 21st, 2019, will be a little more special as it will be the “unveiling” of my Dad and Aunt’s headstones. The last time I was at the cemetery was in March where they just had markers by what was still a mound of dirt covering them. And in some way, even a year later, it still did not feel that their deaths were real. Now, knowing that I will see their headstones, it’s as if reality will smack me in my soul. They really are gone in terms of the physical sense.
The unveiling of the headstones is a Jewish tradition, as found out by a quick google search. C’mon, I eat bacon, so it’s not like I am familiar with all the Jewish traditions. Their headstones will be covered in a cloth and then the Rabbi will lead us through the ceremony. Family members can speak as well if they so choose. The cloths are then removed and we place rocks on the headstones as a sign that their graves were visited. Our family plot has gotten crowded, and I will need a lot more rocks this time around. When the ceremony is over, we go eat, because food always makes the grieving process better, right?
I find the term “unveiling” of their headstones to be interesting, which is why I finally got to the keyboard for this blog. For most of my life, I kept my grief behind a veil. My veil was humor. In the last year, with the help of grief counseling, I started to unveil what I kept hidden for so long. I shared my journey in the book, which as it turns out, is helping others with their grieving process. Too many of us keep our grief hidden and it is time that we realize that it is okay to unveil it to people. Why keep it hidden? All it does is gnaw at our soul. If there is anything I have learned in the last year, it is okay to show that we are human and that we are in pain. There is no shame in showing people that we hurt. Therefore, on this upcoming Sunday, as we remove the pieces of cloth, I will remember to keep my grief unveiled because it needs to be seen, just like my father and aunt’s headstones.
